Audiovisual perception in adverse conditions: Language, speaker and listener effects
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study investigated the relative contribution of auditory and visual information to speech perception by looking at the effect of visual and auditory degradation on the weighting given to visual cues for native and non-native speakers. Multiple iterations of /ba/, /da/ and /ga/ by five Australian English and five Mandarin Chinese speakers were presented to Australian English, British English and Mandarin Chinese participants. Tokens were presented in auditory, visual and congruent/incongruent audiovisual (AV) modes, either in clear or with visual degradation (blurring), auditory degradation (noise) or combined degradations. In the AV clear condition, English-speaking participants showed greater visual weighting for non-native speakers, but this was not found for Chinese participants. In ‘singlechannel degradation’ conditions, the weighting of the intact channel increased significantly, with little influence of speaker language. There was no strong evidence of native-language effects on the weighting of visual cues. The degree of visual weighting varied widely across individual participants, and was also affected by individual speaker characteristics. The weighting of auditory and visual cues is therefore highly flexible and dependent on the information load of each channel; non-native speaker and language-background effects may influence visual weighting but individual perceiver and speaker strategies also have a strong impact. 2010 Elsevier B.V. Nonnative Audiovisual Speech Perception in Noise: Dissociable Effects of the Speaker and Listener
Nonnative speech poses a challenge to speech perception, especially in challenging listening environments. Audiovisual (AV) cues are known to improve native speech perception in noise. The extent to which AV cues benefit nonnative speech perception in noise, however, is much less well-understood. Here, we examined native American English-speaking and native Korean-speaking listeners' perception...

The logic of conversation is based on the speaker (I) , the hearer (you) and the referrent (He). It can take three forms: 1. the speaker talks to the listener about the referrent 2. The speaker talk about the listener to the listener 3. The speaker talks about himself to the listener. The present Paper elaborates on these issues and explains how this logic takes shape in mystical lyrics. The mo...

Everyday conversation is both an auditory and a visual phenomenon. While visual speech information enhances comprehension for the listener, evidence suggests that the ability to benefit from this information improves with development. A number of brain regions have been implicated in audiovisual speech comprehension, but the extent to which the neurobiological substrate in the child compares to...
متن کاملListener-speaker perceived distance predicts the degree of motor contribution to speech perception.
Listening speech sounds activates motor and premotor areas in addition to temporal and parietal brain regions. These activations are somatotopically localized according to the effectors recruited in the production of particular phonemes. Previous work demonstrated that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of speech motor centers somatotopically altered speech perception, suggesting a role fo...
متن کاملTeaching and learning guide for audiovisual speech perception: A new approach and implications for clinical populations
When a speaker talks, the visible consequences of what they are saying can be seen. This auditory (the speech sound) and visual (movements of the lips and other articulators), or AV speech influences what listeners hear both in noisy listening environments and when auditory speech can easily be heard. Thought to be a cross‐cultural phenomenon that emerges early in typical language development, ...
